Why you need this button
EU Directive 2023/2673 requires B2C online stores across the European Union to offer a clear, easy-to-find withdrawal button, so customers don't have to hunt for PDF forms or hidden email addresses to exercise their statutory right of withdrawal. Italy was the first member state to transpose it, via D.Lgs. 209/2025 (art. 54-bis of the Consumer Code), in force from 19 June 2026 — other EU countries are expected to follow with their own national transposition on their own timelines.
What the directive requires:
- Visibility — an easy-to-find button (e.g. in the footer or the orders section), clearly labelled ("Request a return" / "Withdraw from this contract").
- Two-step procedure — the customer first enters order details (name, order number, items), then confirms on a final button, to avoid mistakes.
- Automatic receipt — the system must immediately send the buyer a confirmation with the date and time of the request, on a durable medium.
If a store doesn't offer this, or doesn't inform the customer correctly, the withdrawal period extends from 14 days to 12 months under existing EU consumer law.
